Work Diary, Shoot Six- Rearrangement/Missing facial features

Evaluation

For this shoot I adapted on my idea from before and also introduced a idea which I thought of after I had shoot. I Think this shoot went well however I found it difficult to create some images which would work.

I like how this image turned out, I think that it relates well to the artist which I was basing my work on for part of this shoot. I find it interesting how this image looks and the way it tests realities. I think that the black background creates a dramatic surrounding for the focus of the image.

I really like this image, I find the idea of this image to be interesting. The general editing of this image was not as complected as seen however finishing the image so I was happy with the appearance took time and multiple little adjustments. I like how there appears to be slightly darker areas where features used to be and the affect of which this creates. I think that the darker background and dark clothes create a more dramatic scene which suits this image.

Progression

For my next shoot I want to focus on adapting the idea of this black face and removal of facial features. I would like to try making a multiple image of this idea and using this technique to highlight this idea and produce a piece which shows it in a creative way.

Straight images, Shoot Six- Rearrangement/Missing facial features

Work Diary, Shoot Five- Rearrangement of facial features

Evaluation

Although I only come out with one image  this particular shoot I think it created a great step in how I want to develop my next few shoots and skills. I think this shoot allowed me to decide how I want to continue in this project and one of the areas of which I wanted to explore.

I like how this image turned out and once I had figures out how to create the image was simple to do. I like how creative this image appears and the look which the image creates. I think that the colours withing this image also add the dramatic effect. I think there are a variety of aspects which help build the surrealism approach which is viewed in this image.

Progression

For my next shoot I want to focus on this idea and create images reflecting this topic. A photographer which I am going to look at for inspiration is Giuseppe Matromatteos. The ideas portrayed by this photographer and style of work is similar to what I want to create and how I am to portray my work for the next shoot.

Work Diary, Shoot Three- Multiple People

Evaluation

I really enjoyed shooting for this shoot. However I found that if a slight movement in between image could create difficulties within the editing stage. I also found that if a change of lighting happened during taking the required images for one finial piece lighting would be different and could affect the look of the images and was hard to alter so it matched up well, luckily I didn't have many issues with the changing of natural lighting during this shoot.

This is my favorite image from the shoot and I think by having a variety of different people in the image it just made it slightly different from my others and stood out for me with my straight prints. I Find it interesting how the people are staggered and on different levels withing the image.

With this image I found it hard to create an image which had very similar lighting due to the strong natural lighting shown within the image. I do think that this lighting in the corner of the image makes more interesting involving shadows and matching certain aspects. I think that by creating an image like this it will also help with further work which lighting adjustments may be needed as well. I think I was very successful within this shoot and didn't end up with some very good images which will also help me develop my skills and ideas withing this topic and my work.

Progression

For my next shoot I want to combined the ideas from my two previous shoots and create images based on a photographer I looked at in my research log. I wish to create images showing miniature people placed in a environment. I want to start by doing this in the studio however I think it would be interesting to then see how I could approach this on a location shoot. I think that this idea would also be good in a home environment. I want this shoot to reflect how realities can be challenged and how impossibles can be viewed within photography.

Straight images, Shoot Three- Multiple people

Work Diary, Shoot Two- Resizeing of images

Evaluation
For this shoot I focused on adjusting size however still in an interesting way I feel that i have done this and I have developed throughout the two images I have done. A main issue that i had to over come when doing this editing and shooting was ensuring that I took images that could find into the other that still looked semi realistic as well as the correct shadowing that would occur if the smaller adjusted image was actually in that environment.

This was my first try with this style of work i found it interesting to edit and like the finial result. however i had an issue with the focusing in this image I found that the hand was actually slightly out of focus compared to the face and had to adjust the boy to match the hand to make the two images join more smoothly.

I done this image after to help build on my work and improve errors from before. i think that this image did turn out better and i like the finial result. In my opinion i think that the shadowing on the two image are slightly different however i think i approached this issue well and have edited to the best of my ability.

Progression
For my next shoot i want to look at having mutiple people within one image. i want to have one person photographed in a variety of areas and join the image to show this person in the variety of places in one image. I want to do this to help progress to an i dead i have for a shoot further ahead.

Photographer Research- David Hockney

Photographer Information

Known for his photo collages and paintings of Los Angeles swimming pools, David Hockney is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century.
He attended art school in London before moving to Los Angeles in the 1960s. In the 1970s, Hockney began working in photography, creating photo collages he called joiners.
While working on a painting of a Los Angeles living room, he took a series of photos for his own reference, and fixed them together so he could paint from the image. When he finished, however, he recognized the collage as an art form unto itself, and began to create more.
Hockney was an adept photographer, and he began working with photography more extensively. By the mid 1970s, he had all but abandoned painting in favor of projects involving photography, lithographs, and set and costume design for the ballet, opera and theater.

Why I chose this Photographer

I choose David Hockney due to his unique take on multiple imagery and photojoiner. I think his work will help me learn different ways in which I can use photojoiner and multiple imagery and widen my ideas for this technique due to the creative way in which he represents it.

Photographer Examples

This image is an example of the way in which David Hockney created photojoiner pieces in his work. I like how each photo is only a small section and each photo would be of a small section and show a lot of detail. I think by using this many zoomed in images it creates an image which looks like to have had a great deal of time spent on it and creates a good image. I like how some smaller images placed in this photojoiner are lighter or darker and create some contrast and variation within the images which involve very similar areas.

I like how two image have been placed potentially outside the area of the photojoiner as if seen as more important and wanted to be highlighted. I also think that by using this technique it can display only wanted areas. For example, like the image above it only has the person shown and doesn't waste space on not filled areas. A artist can show what it wants the view to purely focus on.

I like the way in which he has approached this image. I think the images collected could have been used for a good photojoiner however have been placed in this large multiple image. I think by placing these images in a multiple image it created a fascinating and creative image. I think by doing this the slightly difference in zoom and tones from each image create the unusual effect.

I like how this image has slightly lighter areas around the guitar and highlights detail. I think by creating this effect in the image it can zoom in on certain objects or interesting areas to maximize focus on these areas and objects. I like how this image also creates divisions within the image in my mind, for example I see the flowers, fruit bowl and guitar as more divided then I would if they was one simple image. I think that by almost pulling a section apart and putting it back together in this creative view on the technique can create a possibly quite boring and plain photograph and adapt it to produce a more detailed and interesting photo.

Influence

David Hockney has influence the way in which I will structure my multiple imagery and photojoiner's. I think he has been a creative influence and inspired me to develop and expand my ideas within this area of work.

Summary

To summarise this photographer I think that he has very creative pieces and way of exploring different photomontage techniques. I like the way in which he joins images which reflect one certain area which normally would only be shown in one image. However he seems to pull apart a section and adjust size and tones slightly to enhance the uniqueness of his work.

Photographer Research- Tomas Barbey

Photographer Information

Thomas Barbèy grew up in Geneva, Switzerl. Tomas Barbey designed posters for musical bands, Before deciding to move to Italy, where he lived in Milan for 15 years making a living as a successful recording artist, lyricist and fashion photographer. More recently, he has been doing Black and White Photomontages for the sole purpose of doing Fine Art, without working for a specific client.

He has combined several images taken over a period of twenty years to create surreal situations with the help of the enlarger in a dark room. His work has a specific style and is very characteristic. He only works with Black and White, including Sepia toning at times.

Every single one of his images has to pass what he likes to call the “So what?” test. If a combination of two or more negatives put together does't touch him or have any particular meaning, he starts over. At times, he tries to combine images and sometimes the results can be disappointing. A giant clock in the middle of the ocean can be an unusual image, but if he looks at it and says to himself, “So what?”, this means it isn't good enough.” If, instead, an ocean liner is going down a “funnel-type” hole and he titles it “Shortcut to China”, it takes on a whole new meaning. The picture takes you into an imaginary world where you can see the captain telling the passengers to fasten their safety belts and get prepared for the descent, and so on.

At times Thomas comes up with ideas beforehand, try to materialize them and it works. At other times, it comes as an accident, where the ideas come afterwards, when the image is already finished and the concept has yet to be understood. Thomas claims he is learning constantly through the process of creation.

Sometimes he uses an image several years later, but only when it fits, like the perfect piece in a puzzle, and completes his latest project. Thomas exhibits in galleries throughout the world and is included in many private collections.

Why I chose this Photographer

I choose Tomas Barbey as I found his combining of images to be a good way to look at photomontage. I think that this is a good way to join two different images in a way which makes sense and looks good. Also many of his photo manipulation pieces inspired me and I found to be quite interesting and made me question the different techniques he used. I feel if I research more into his it could help me improve my work through out this project and provide inspiration within my pieces

Photographer Examples

I like how this image combines the two very different images and how smooth and create they are joined. I find it interesting how it makes you think about the person and the message being put across by the artist which could be read differently by each individual. This image makes me think about superman and some superman poster due to the positioning of the person and the way of there hands. I like how it makes you see that underneath people can hide the unexpected.

I like how this image is another example of a creative way to combined two images which would not normally be associated. The transition form one image to the next is smooth and doesn't appear to fake. I like how this images approaches photomontage and displays the surrealism side of it. I think that this image is a prime example how Tomas Barbey tackles this photography topic i'm a different way to others and tests realities within his work.

I like the effect created due to the way in which this image has been edited and that way in which it is shown. I like how the image placed inside shows a place where you unwind and relax and to get there you have to unzip the person almost releasing any stress and falling into a better surrounding. I find the way in which this image has been placed within the other to be very creative and can could be interpreted in a few different ways and the message it portrays.

I image about has blended two images together and made them flow into one image. I think this is an interesting way to show two different objects within an image and match perfectly. I like how the person is full yet the other object shown in the image has been eaten and has missing pieces.

Influence

Tomas Barbey has influenced my work by broadening the idea of which images would work together and could be used to create an exciting image. I think that by looking at his work he has made me stretch and help we step out of a comfort zone and approach this project in a unique way.

Summary

Overall I find Tomas Barbey to have been an interesting photographer to research and look into. I think that not only his work but messages and thought he puts behind his images reflects in his work. Providing inspiration for others within his ideas and way he works.

Photographer Research- Erik Johanson

Why I chose this Photographer

I chose Erik Johnson as a photographer as I found his style and angle of this topics to be creative and unique. I think that this ideas and manipulation of photos to be interesting and complex but portrayed effortlessly.

Photographer Examples

I like the way in which his images can reflect different messages, I think this is shown within this image. I like the way in which this images has been created.

I like the way in which lighting has also been used in this image to create a more dramatic effort.

I think that the way in which this image has been placed inside a bottle to create this effort is effective and an interesting way to display the two images. I think this is a very creative and effective idea.

The depth and sense of direction is what interests me about this image. The way in which the main aspects of the image have been positioned I think give this image the good look and help portray the message which he is aiming for.

Influence

By studying Erik Johnsons work I think he has created a great inspiration within my work. The style and creativity of his work provides and

Summary

To summarise Erik Johnsons work i would say i find his work to have provided inspiration within my work and helped me developed within this project. I find his take on this subjected/ project.

Photographer Research- Jerry Uelsmann

Photographer Information

Why I chose this photographer

I choose Jerry Uelsmann as a photographer to research as I found his work to explore some areas of photomontage which I had not considered. I think it would be beneficial to research him in more depth to widen my point of view of the topic.

Photographer Examples

I like how this image has been created by just more than two images. I find it interesting how before the hands the image would still create a interesting surrealism effect due to the boy standing on clouds. I think by then placing this image inside the hands/ placing the hand outline on the image has help to an integrating piece.

I like the ideas and strong messages portrayed within many of his images. I like how these roots represent how a home is where the roots of the family are. Where a family are together and grounded and safe and secure.

Many of Jerry Uelsmann's pieces have this very unique and different ideas. I like how this piece has no necessary need to have the lips placed on the road and no direct message it has to put across or make people think. Its purpose is to simply be an interesting piece and make people question.

I like how these two images have been placed together to create this image. I find the idea of this image however quite weird and different as in my mind i can not find a direct link or reason why the two images are put together. This is what i like about some of his work to create questions and test what people find as normal and question truths and realities.

Influence

Jerry Uelsmann has influenced my work in the way I am less worried to be different and try ideas and if they don't worry then it was a learning curve. I think his work helped me to realise not all pieces have to have a depth meaning and within this topic you can create in a sense random images which you simply done because they look good and enjoy to create.

Summary

Overall I enjoyed looking into his work and find him to be a interesting and unique artist. I like how he approach's the topic and his ideas as well as the inspiration he creates for others.

Photographer Examples

I like how this image gives the appearance that the women is in the water although she probably wasn't when the image was taken. Amy Spanos has created many techniques like this and I like the idea behind it.

I like how this images makes me think about how it was taken. I think that the positioning of the person helps create a relaxed feel to the image.

I really like this image I think it creates a horror effect and a scary atmosphere in the image. There are different areas which help create this, The way in which her head is shows her squeezing through and looks quite intimidating. Making people question if a person could truly fit and why was they in there in the first place.

I like how this image is focused and the way in which it has a piece of the on the left is not focused. I like how the background would usually appear as very cluttered and busy for an image like this however the idea of the image keeps pure focus on the girl.

Influence

I find Amy Spanos work to have a unique perspective, I like how she has looked at a variety of different styles, testing her self through out her work. She has influenced me from her work by the way in which I create this photos and the people in them.
